Give it a tug...unplug

Unplug appliances and electronics why they are not in use. Even the simple act of unplugging cell phone chargers, DVD players and other electronics while on vacation can help. Your appliances draw power, even when they are not turned on. In the U.S. alone, this "phantom electricity" emits about 12 million tons of carbon per year (Conservation International). So do yourself a favor and unplug what you aren't using!

You can drive 55

According to the National Geogrraphic Green Guide, slowing down to 55 mph from 65 mph can increase your fuel efficiency by 15%, reducing your speed from 70 to 55, you can see a 23% reduction in your gas consumption. It pays to slow down.

It all starts with a switch

According to earthday.net, if every household in the U.S. replaced a burned out blub with an energy efficient one, we'd save enough energy to light 2.5 million homes for a year. Dim your lights or turn off lights when you leave a room. It won't just help the environment, it will save you some cash!

Businesses not recycling?

Do you ever find yourself disappointed when you find out a business doesn’t recycle? Don’t you think that they should also be responsible more aware of our environment? When I found out one of my favorite businesses doesn’t recycle, I don’t know if I can be a patron there anymore.. Come on people – let’s get it together and try to protect our planet! If I can do it, so can you!!

I am better than you....

As I was driving to work through my Franklin subdivision,  I noticed that my recycling bin is much more full than my neighbors. So what is it, do you not know what recycling is or do you not know how to separate recycling items? Come on’ Franklin – it doesn’t take that much effort. I mean, if Brett Andrews (the fool can’t even read) can recycle, then shouldn’t you be able to? Let’s step Franklin and show up Brett Andrews!!

Coffee Cups

Recently I went and got coffee and then went back that same day for a refill and I asked them just to use my same cup. It didn’t save me any money but it did save me from hurting the environment by adding more trash. So next time you go to your favorite coffee shop, think about reusing your cup from the previous day or even purchasing a reusable cup.  Think about....

Even beer drinking, you can still be green...

This past weekend I went camping with some friends and they were drinking beer and throwing the cans in the trash. I went through the garbage bag and started a “recycling” bag. In typical Wes fashion, I lectured them all about separating their recyclables from their trash. Then I proceeded to burn all the cardboard which I’m not sure if that is helping the environment. I will find that out though, but my heart was in the right place.  Tune in next week for the answer.

Ridding your yard of mosquitoes

I know that with it being summer and all mosquitoes are a huge problem but did you know the best way to keep them away and be friendly to the environment is to keep your grass cut short? Mosquitoes like long grass so just making sure that you keep it short will help keep them away. No need for all the nasty sprays and chemicals that hurt the environment. Who knew that there was something so simple to help the environment and keep me from getting bit up!

Paperless Morning Show

So recently I brought it up to my co-workers on the Morning Show that we should maybe stop printing so many things, let’s try to conserve some paper. We usually waste at least 15 sheets of paper each morning that adds up to 75 sheets per week which is 300 per month and 3600 per year! That’s a whole lot of paper!! So thank you printer for never working and teaching me that we can run an effective Morning Show without printing anything out!

My electric usage

My electric and gas usage is down by 20% this year already. Not that was I doing that on purpose but I was really happy to see that the last time I opened up my bill. It wasn’t really my plan but now my goal is to lower it by 20% every year. Not only does it save money but it helps the environment too! That is my favorite 1 Thing—saving me money but doing something good for the environment!
